A Useful Target
As I have said here, the trigger for this blog was Ray Kurzweil's appearence on C-SPAN back in November when he was given 3 hours to address the nation on his psuedo-religion. Kurzweil believes that the entire universe will be converted into a giant computer!!! This is frothing-at-the-mouth nonsense, but Kurzweil uses his excellent credentials to convince a gullible public that he is worth listening to.
However, I think Kurzweil's main goal is to convince himself, not others. As Sir Peter Medawar said in reference to an early transhumanist, Pierre Tielhard de Chardin: "its author can be excused of dishonesty only on the grounds that before deceiving others he has taken great pains to deceive himself."
I single Mr. Kurzweil out because his latest book, The Singularity is Near, makes a handy target. It is the most sophisticated representation of transhumanism so, if I can refute it, then I can handle any transhumanist argument.
